Thai visa extensions: when to apply and what to bring
Rules checked: 1 October 2026. Immigration practice varies by office and changes over time. Check with your local immigration office before you go.
The date that matters is the one on your latest entry or extension stamp. That's your permission to stay. An extension moves that date, and you apply at your local immigration office before it passes.
When to apply
- Most offices accept extension applications in the 30 days before your permission to stay ends. Some accept them earlier for certain extension types.
- ThaiTrack reminds you 30 to 45 days ahead, so you have time to gather documents.
Where to apply
- At the immigration office that covers your address, using form TM7.
- For some extension types, you can apply online through the official VFS E-Extension service.
What to bring
- Your passport and the completed TM7 form, with a recent photo.
- Your TM30 receipt and your latest 90-day receipt.
- Supporting documents for your extension type. For example, retirement extensions usually need proof of funds. The amount often cited is 800,000 THB in a Thai bank account.
- The fee. A tourist extension is typically 1,900 THB. Office fees vary by extension type.
Leaving during your extension
- If you leave Thailand without a re-entry permit, your extension usually ends when you leave.
- A re-entry permit is typically 1,000 THB for a single entry or 3,800 THB for multiple entries.
If your stay runs out
- Overstay is fined at 500 THB per day, up to a maximum of 20,000 THB.
- Longer overstays can bring an entry ban when you leave. These are the commonly cited tiers if you report the overstay yourself on departure: 90 days or more, a 1-year ban; 1 year or more, 3 years; 3 years or more, 5 years; 5 years or more, 10 years. Bans can be longer if the overstay is found by the authorities instead.
How ThaiTrack helps
ThaiTrack reminds you before your permission to stay ends, tracks your re-entry permit before trips, and builds an Immigration Day Kit for your extension from the documents in your vault.
